Introducing
Margaret Tunoa-Scanlan

Dry January® USA Ambassador

Margaret is a dental student at Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry in the class of 2028.  She is the daughter of Nigerian immigrants, but was born and raised in Raleigh, NC. She completed her undergraduate studies at East Carolina University where she obtained a B.S. in Public Health with a concentration in Community Health. During her time in undergrad she served as both student ambassador for the university and student representative of DEI for the Department of Health Education and Promotion. In spring of 2022, Margaret completed a research internship with the ECU School of Dental Medicine focused on assessing positive effects associated with exercise on expecting mothers and baby, as well as a focus on decreasing racial disparities in adverse health outcomes in pregnancy.

Margaret’s greatest joy in life was saying yes and marrying her best friend and husband, Raymond. They have been volunteering and studying together as a team since they met their freshmen year at ECU in biology.

They both met Dr. Caldwell when they decided to volunteer at a Dry January USA event. Dr. Caldwell’s passion for public health, kindness, and overall desire to make an impact on our communities attracted Margaret to working with him. Together, they have supported Dry January USA initiatives and helped to spread awareness of the effects alcohol has on oral health.
