
About Dr. Michael Caldwell

Dr. Michael Caldwell is a nationally recognized expert in vaccine research & education, public health and alcohol research & prevention. He is a public health leader with specialties in Infectious Diseases, HIV, Immunology, Medical Affairs BioPharma, Tobacco Control, Alcohol, Emergency Preparedness, Healthcare Policy and Health & Human Rights.
Dr. Caldwell, a former Fellow in Public Health Leadership at the Harvard School of Public Health, is a trained internal medicine and preventive medicine physician with a Masters in Public Health. He served as the Director of the Nashville Public Health Department during the first year of the COVID pandemic as well as Commissioner of Health for Dutchess County, NY for nineteen years and as President of the National Association of County & City Health Officials in Washington, DC.
He has served as Director of Scientific Affairs & Public Health, Vaccines with GSK and was part of the US and Global launch teams for Shingrix, the new vaccine for shingles. Additionally, he served as Field Medical Director for AstraZeneca/MedImmune in Infectious Diseases/Respiratory as well as the Medical Manager in Neuroimmunology for Viela Bio/Syneos.
Previously, Dr Michael Caldwell has worked as a resident physician at ABC News in the ABC News national medical unit with Dr. Richard Besser and has written a monthly column on health and wellness for the Poughkeepsie Journal newspaper and online editions.
An established clinical researcher with a specialty in vaccine research, development and implementation, he was Principal Investigator of eighteen clinical research studies including research vaccines for Lyme disease, herpes, hepatitis, HIV/AIDS, seasonal flu, pandemic flu and HPV/cervical cancer. Currently, he is serving as an investigator for over twenty active clinical research studies including for investigational vaccines for COVID, RSV, CMV, Pneumonia and Flu. Other therapeutic areas include clinical research studies for stop-smoking, migraines, GERD, and Diabetes.

An academic researcher, he has served on the National Coordinating Center of Public Health Systems & Services Research; the national Practiced Based Research Networks (PBRN) National Advisory Committee as its Chair; and a member of the National Commission on Prevention Priorities.

In 2021, Dr. James E.K. Hildreth, President & CEO of Meharry Medical College asked Dr Caldwell to join Meharry to help build a private-academic partnership to advance diversity in clinical trials. He also asked him to participate in the evolution of the newly announced Meharry School of Global Health. Dr. Caldwell teaches the public health courses for the medical students, the physical diagnosis skill training classes, and he is advancing Meharry's work with public health nationally and now globally.
